When Should my Child have Their First Dental Check-up?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends children visit the dentist within six months of their first tooth appearing or by their first birthday. Following this initial visit, regular dental check-ups should be scheduled every six months.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Your child’s first dental visit is important for setting up a lifetime of good dental health. During the visit, we’ll check for any early signs of dental problems and teach you how to take care of your child’s teeth.

We make this visit fun and easy. Your child will meet our friendly team and sit in the dental chair. The dentist will check their teeth for any signs of decay or alignment issues. We’ll also talk about how to brush and floss daily and avoid too many sugary foods.

  • What does a pediatric dentist do?

A pediatric dentist takes care of kids’ teeth from when they are babies through their teenage years. They know how to handle the special dental needs of children at different ages. Pediatric dentists perform regular check-ups, cleanings and cavity treatments. They also provide guidance on proper brushing and flossing techniques, address habits like thumb-sucking and offer advice on nutrition to promote healthy teeth and gums. By focusing on preventive care, pediatric dentists help avoid serious dental issues down the road.

  • How often should kids go to the dentist?

Kids should visit the dentist every six months for check-ups and cleanings. This keeps their teeth and gums healthy and catches any problems early. Regular visits help reinforce good oral hygiene habits and can make kids more comfortable with dental care. During these visits, the dentist can also provide treatments such as fluoride applications and dental sealants to protect against cavities.

  • When do kids need braces?

Kids usually need braces if they have alignment issues with their teeth or jaws, which can be found during regular dental visits. If needed, an orthodontic evaluation will help decide the best time for braces. While some children may start orthodontic treatment as early as age 7, others might not need braces until they’re older. Early evaluation by the dentist or orthodontist ensures that any potential problems are caught early, allowing for timely and effective treatment to guide proper dental development.
