What is oral surgery?
Oral surgery is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing and treating diseases, injuries, and deformities of the teeth, gums, mouth, jaw and face. This field, also known as oral and maxillofacial surgery, encompasses procedures that can significantly improve function and appearance.

How long does oral surgery take?
Oral surgery can vary in time based on the complexity of the procedure and the type of anesthesia or sedation used. Most surgeries are completed within a few hours, but you should plan to rest for the remainder of the day.

How long does it take to recover from an oral surgery?
Recovery from oral surgery typically spans one to two weeks. Initial recovery involves resting for a few days, with pain levels depending on the procedure performed. We provide pain management strategies, including medication, to help alleviate discomfort during your recovery period. You can usually expect some bleeding, swelling and soreness after surgery.
Bleeding
To manage bleeding, gently bite on the gauze pad placed over the surgical site, applying pressure for 20-30 minutes. Repeat this process until the bleeding subsides. If bleeding persists, use a gauze soaked in strong tea. Avoid strenuous activities that could elevate blood pressure and disrupt the blood clot.
Swelling
Apply ice packs to the affected area in 10-minute intervals for the first 72 hours to reduce swelling. After this period, switch to warm compresses to alleviate any remaining swelling. Swelling is a normal part of the healing process and can last from a few days to several weeks, depending on the surgery.
Discomfort
Post-surgical pain is common and can be managed with prescribed medications. Typically, a combination of acetaminophen and ibuprofen is recommended for pain relief without the side effects associated with narcotics. Follow all medication instructions carefully to effectively manage your discomfort.

What are tips to help with recovery after oral surgery?
Here are some guidelines to aid your recovery:
- Avoid rinsing your mouth for the first 24 hours post-surgery.
- Refrain from heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for 3-5 days.
- Don’t smoke.
- Avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes, acidic foods, crunchy foods, and mints.
- Avoid activities that create suction in your mouth, like using straws or playing wind instruments.
- Don’t touch or examine the surgical area excessively.
- Skip facial massages for at least three weeks.
- Only use bite appliances if instructed by your dentist.
- After grafting procedures, avoid electric toothbrushes or flossing the surgical area until advised otherwise.
Contact your dentist if you experience severe bleeding, cannot maintain a nutritious diet after 48 hours, notice increased pain or swelling after three days, or have any allergic reactions to medications.

What foods should I eat after oral surgery?
After your procedure, opt for cool, soft foods that are easy to chew and less likely to disturb blood clots:
- Applesauce
- Jell-O
- Mashed Potatoes
- Oatmeal
- Rice
- Soups
- Yogurt
Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water but avoid using straws. For the first week, steer clear of carbonated drinks, alcohol and hot beverages to ensure a smooth recovery.
